Dentistry

The Division of Dentistry and Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery offers a full range of dental services for children and adolescents, focusing on those with medical conditions. Our mission is to provide every child with a healthy smile.

Services

Our team provides dental care to children and adolescents, including those affected by traumatic dental injuries, early childhood tooth decay, and craniofacial abnormalities. We offer dental treatment under conscious sedation and general anesthesia.

We are an important partner to several of the hospital’s departments and services, including the Trauma Unit, the Craniofacial and Cleft Surgery Unit and the Emergency Department. We also collaborate closely with the Mackay Rehabilitation Centre (Saliva Management Clinic).

We are also the dental reference centre of the Shriners Hospital for Children in Canada.

Specialized clinics

The Division of Dentistry and Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the MCH is home to several clinics.

• The Tiny Teeth, Big Smiles Clinic offers dental care  for very young children.
• The Special Needs Orthodontic Clinic helps neurodiverse children and children with cognitive impairments and medical conditions.
• The Immigrant and Refugee Pediatric Dental Clinic serves newly-arrived children who do not have access to provincial coverage for dental care yet.

Clinical research

Our innovative research focusses on three key areas: 

• children’s oral health
• new techniques in pediatric dentistry
• medically compromised children and children with rare conditions and syndromes
