The Cytogenetics Laboratory analyzes many conditions, provides chromosome tests before and after birth and performs autopsies, when required. We also use conventional tests as well as newer techniques to detect viruses that can be dangerous during pregnancy. Some pathologists specialize in genetic testing that can determine the most appropriate treatment for some types of cancer.

Dermatopathology studies diseases related to the skin. Gastroenterology focuses on the digestive tract to identify many disorders, including inflammatory bowel diseases, hepatitis or digestive problems.

The MCH Pathology team conducts extensive cell and tissue testing in its laboratories. We can:

• detect disease, inflammation or necrosis (tissue death)
• identify injury to cells and tissues
• evaluate wound healing
• test new tissue or growths
• interpret lab tests to help rule out illness or monitor a chronic condition.

Testing the placenta can help in early neonatal care.

Our biopsy and consultation services help plan treatment strategies before, during and after organ transplant. Our skilled pathologists:

• do pre-transplant biopsies on patients to confirm the need for a transplant;
• test organs after the patient has undergone transplant surgery to spot possible complications, including infection, restricted blood supply or organ rejection;
• conduct tests on the removed organ to confirm the pre-transplant diagnosis and make a decision about the treatment plan.
