Advanced roles in the NICU

There are many different avenues through which you can continue to develop your skills and advance your practice in the NICU,

Team leader
Experienced nurses who are in charge of patient movements and nursing assignments. They also act as a resource for nurses on the unit.

Resuscitation nurse
Responds to deliveries in the birthing center, as well as code pinks and other urgent situations in the NICU. Also acts as a resource for nurses on the unit.

Transport nurse
Responsible for transporting outborn babies requiring tertiary care to our NICU, as well as internal transports/tests within the hospital. Also acts as a resource for nurses on the unit.

PICC line nurse
Trained to insert and manage peripherally inserted central catheters (PICC). Contributes to quality improvement of vascular access care.

Committee members
Nurses interested in a particular topic are invited to join working groups and projects to contribute to research and quality improvement. Examples include the developmental care committee, family engagement working groups, infection control, etc.
