Online job offer scams – how to protect yourself

Fake online job offers are on the rise. Fraudulent emails claiming to come from the McGill University Health Centre or the Montreal Children’s Hospital have been targeting job seekers, many from outside Canada. These scams can also appear on legitimate job websites and professional or social networks, including LinkedIn. Scammers make false promises about job opportunities and often try to collect personal information—or even money—from applicants.

Stay alert when job hunting online

The MUHC is always looking for qualified and dedicated professionals. If you’re interested in joining our team, we encourage you to visit our Careers page.

Here are some tips to help you avoid falling for fake job offers:

  • Do your research. Before applying, look up the organization online and compare the information you find with what’s in the job posting or email.
  • Never share personal details too soon. The MUHC will never ask for personal information such as your bank account or social insurance number in an initial job offer or email.
  • Trust your instincts. If something feels off or too good to be true, proceed with caution and report the suspicious offer.
