Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS)
The Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) program at the Montreal Children’s Hospital is part of a province-wide initiative led by Santé Québec to improve patient care.
The ERAS program uses evidence-based practices before, during, and after surgery to help patients recover faster, feel better, and return to their normal activities sooner.
ERAS encourages a team-based approach to patient care, ensuring different health care experts work together to support each patient and their family at every step of surgery. ERAS also promotes patient and family empowerment, helping them take an active role in their care and in decision-making.
Key Principles of Our ERAS Program
Before surgery
- Screening every patient for malnutrition
- Teaching using specialized educational booklets
- Assessments to address modifiable health conditions
On the morning of surgery
- Giving medicine to prevent pain
- Fasting for less time and encouraged intake of carbohydrate-rich clear fluids
During surgery
- Giving antibiotics to reduce infection risk
- Using the right type of anesthesia techniques
- Maintaining the body at a warm temperature
- Giving medicine to prevent nausea and vomiting after surgery
After surgery
- Using different medications and approaches to manage pain
- Getting up and eating soon after surgery
- Continued education before discharge
Note: Always follow the specific recommendations provided by your medical team.
Who Is Eligible for an ERAS Pathway?
ERAS pathways are used for both children and adults undergoing many types of surgeries.
Traditionally, ERAS was implemented in adult elective surgeries, but over the last few years, it has expanded to include pediatric and emergency surgeries.
At the Montreal Children’s Hospital, we began implementing ERAS in 2019, starting with a pathway for Chest Wall surgeries in collaboration with the General Surgery team.
Since joining the provincial ERAS initiative, we have developed an ERAS pathway for Scoliosis surgery with our Orthopedic Surgery team. We continue to expand this work by developing new pathways with other surgical specialties, including Otorhinolaryngology (ENT), Urology, Maxillofacial, and Plastic Surgery.
