Contact Information (for parent or guardian)

As a leader in mental health, the Department of Psychiatry at the Montreal Children’s Hospital (MCH) provides services to children, adolescents and their families, and promotes a culture of excellence, innovation and continuing education.

Referrals

To get a referral for your child to outpatient mental health services within the healthcare network:

  • Meet with your pediatrician or family doctor to discuss the problems.
  • Have the doctor write a consultation request.
  • Deliver the consultation request to your local CLSC’s Intake Office for Youth Mental Health (Guichet d’accès en santé mentale jeunesse – GASMJ).
  • The intake office will help you find the mental health resources available to you and determine if a psychiatric consultation is needed.

First appointment

The first appointment often requires both parents or the legal guardian to be present. Please bring your child’s health insurance cards and all of your child’s psychiatric and psychological assessment reports.

If your child or teenager is showing signs of suicidal or homicidal behaviour, take them to the Emergency Department as soon as possible. You can call 911 for guidance.

First Episode Psychosis Program Clinic

A medical referral is not always necessary to access this service. If you are concerned about a young person’s condition and psychotic symptoms, you are strongly encouraged to contact the clinic without delay. Tel.: 514-412-4400, ext. 24449

Services

Our teams assess and treat children and adolescents, while taking their family situation and dynamics into account. We work with partners in the community to promote continuity of care and improve our patients’ quality of life.

Treatment plans include a combination of:

  • psychotherapy
  • behaviour management
  • family therapy or counselling
  • intervention and liaison with schools
  • prescription drugs (if necessary)

Individualized treatment plans focus on the safety of each patient during the hospital stay and are determined in close conjunction with the families and external resources.
