Brain, Development and Behaviour
About the program
The Brain Development and Behavior program is a collaboration between the Developmental Pediatrics Program and the allied health services (e.g. speech language pathology, occupational therapy, and psychology) of the Montréal Children’s Hospital (MCH). The multidisciplinary clinical teams provide developmental evaluation services to youth with specific, complex developmental and behavioral conditions, as well as follow-up care for certain populations. Services are provided in coordination with resources in the community.
Mission
To support the growth, identity and potential of children and youth with developmental diversity in a welcoming and inclusive environment.
We aim to accomplish our mission by:
- Engaging in comprehensive, family-centered, and culturally safe services focused on identifying children’s strengths, difficulties, levels of functioning, and diagnostic profile when applicable
- Accompanying families and facilitating access to resources and supports
- Sharing expertise with first-line services in the community and primary care physicians
- Advocating on behalf of our children and youth to improve the capacity of our health care network to optimize resources and provide equitable access to care and services
- Promoting a work environment based on mutual respect, inclusivity and collaborative learning
Vision
To provide equitable, accessible, coordinated, and evidence-based care and support to youth with developmental diversity & their families.
Core values
Inclusion, integrity, teamwork, innovation, diversity, collaboration
Our services
Our services are for children and youth who are actively followed at the Montreal Children’s Hospital and/or who reside in one of the McGill RUISSS territories (see list below) in which their local CISSS/CIUSSS or school board does not provide diagnostic evaluation services meeting the complex needs of the child or youth.
Nunavik (region 17), the Cree Territory (region 18), Nord du Québec (region 10), Abitibi-Temiscamingue (region 8), Outaouais (region 7), Montérégie west (region 16), West-Central Montreal and the West Island of Montreal (region 6).
Our services include:
- Multi-disciplinary developmental evaluation services to children and youth 0-17 years old with a suspicion of autism spectrum disorder, developmental coordination disorder, fetal alcohol syndrome and/ or complex developmental delay (moderate to severe delays in 2 or more spheres of development).
- Consultation services for youth 7-17 years old who have a pre-existing diagnosis of ADHD, but for whom treatment has been trialed and unsuccessful
- Consultation and follow-up services for children/youth with gender diversity
How to refer
MCH physicians and MCH allied health professionals
can refer to our services via the online referral form. Please note that all children and youth with developmental delays or differences in social communication must also be referred to their local CISSS/CIUSSS, with the needs of the child clearly identified. This will ensure the child/youth/family benefits from timely community-based stimulation services, intervention and family support when applicable.
Community-based physicians
cannot make a direct referral to our developmental evaluation services, unless the child is actively followed at the MCH, in which case this must be indicated on the referral. All other referrals must be sent via the CISSS/CIUSSS, from where our partners will connect directly with us for referrals requiring our assistance.
