The Primary Ciliary Dyskinesia (PCD) clinic of the Montreal Children’s Hospital is the first and only PCD clinic in Quebec. We see both children and adults suspected of having PCD.
Referrals
Patients suspected of having PCD may be referred for a clinical consultation in the PCD clinic. Please direct referrals to Dr. Adam Shapiro, Pediatric Respiratory Medicine.
If your child has already been diagnosed at another clinical centre, you are encouraged to have the diagnosis confirmed through our clinic, which will allow you to take part in our PCD research and trials.
About PCD
PCD is a rare genetic disease causing:
- chronic cough
- recurrent pneumonias
- repeat ear infections
- chronic nasal congestion or sinusitis
Many newborns with PCD also have trouble breathing and their chest x-rays show parts of their lungs collapsed. Often this is misdiagnosed as neonatal pneumonia. Most of these babies require weeks of supplemental oxygen therapy and prolonged stays in the neonatal intensive care unit.
At least half of PCD patients also have reversed or misplaced internal organs (known as situs inversus or situs ambiguus), sometimes in combination with congenital heart defects.
