Caring Connections: Pediatric Bereavement Follow-Up Program
Bereavement support is available for families who have experienced the death of a child who has received care through the Montreal Children’s Hospital (MCH). The Pediatric Bereavement Follow-Up Program is designed to offer coordinated support and guidance to children and families during the first year following a death, as they navigate the journey of grief.
Program overview
Our Bereavement Follow-Up Program includes:
- Bereavement follow-up: Within days of a child’s death, the family will be contacted by the MCH psychosocial professional (social worker, spiritual care worker, psychologist, Child Life worker, nurse) who knew the child and family while the child was receiving care at the MCH. The family will be offered regular contact (1 month, 3 months, 6 months, 11 months), personalized support and accompaniment during the first year following the death. We prioritize this model of support, as this professional already knows the child and family. Support may also be provided by the bereavement coordinator, should a family not have been known to a MCH psychosocial professional or would prefer additional/alternative support.
- Mailing of resources: Families will receive written material within the first month following a death, with helpful information, online resources, and coordinates for the hospital bereavement coordinator.
- Referral: Referral to community-based resources (ex. CLSC, Le Phare), online resources and support can be facilitated, as needed.
- MCH memorial service: All families that have lost a child who have received care at the MCH will be invited to the MCH memorial service to honor and remember their child, as well as reconnect with healthcare professionals who knew them. This event provides opportunity for reflection, connection and healing.
To come in winter 2025
Support groups: These groups will provide a safe and supportive environment for sharing experiences, coping strategies, and fostering connections.
