If you’re friendly, love people and have a great smile, then this program is for you! You’ll help patients and families find their way to clinics and departments when they come to the Children’s.
Inpatient care areas:
Volunteer duties can include playing with children and their siblings in patient rooms or in play areas, providing support for their families. This volunteer work can be done seven days a week from 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. on the medical and surgical wards, with greater demands on weekdays.
Day services:
Volunteer duties include greeting and talking to families and patients, and playing with children and their siblings in main waiting areas, (Monday to Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.)
Lire, Imagine, Read Program:
Volunteers read to patients and family members in the clinic waiting areas. This program encourages the promotion of literacy, and would be of interest to volunteers who enjoy working with children of all age groups and their siblings. This program is open to people such as teachers, librarians and daycare workers who have experience with storytelling in groups (Monday to Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.)
Emergency Department:
Volunteer duties may include playing with patients and siblings in the Emergency Department waiting areas (7 days per week, 8:00 a.m. to midnight).
Hematology-oncology (Day Treatment Centre and Inpatient Unit):
Due to the complex care provided to patients in hematology-oncology, volunteers must have at least six months of experience at the Montreal Children’s Hospital before being assigned to these areas. Volunteers can work in the Day Centre (Monday to Friday, 9:00 a.m. to noon) or on the inpatient unit (7 days/week, 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.)
Meet and Inform Program:
This program is ideal for volunteers who would like to work with families who have recently been admitted to the hospital, answering questions and letting them know about services that are available (family rooms, playrooms, restaurants and shops, etc.).
