Supporting children through loss

Supporting children through loss

A peer support program for siblings grieving the death of a brother or sister

Losing a sibling is one of the most profound losses a child can face. At the Montreal Children’s Hospital, we understand the unique grief that children aged 6-12 experience when they lose a sibling. That’s why we are offering a Pediatric Bereavement Peer Support Group designed specifically for children to process their grief in a safe, supportive environment.

About the program

This free, bi-weekly peer support group is inspired by the Dougy Model of grief support, a leading approach to helping children cope with loss. The group provides an opportunity for children to connect with others who are going through similar experiences, learn healthy coping skills, and express their feelings through structured activities. It is facilitated by trained grief counselors who specialize in supporting children through the grieving process.

Benefits of peer support groups for children

Research shows that peer support groups can have a profound impact on children who are grieving. The benefits include:

  1. Normalization of Grief: Children realize they are not alone in their grief, which helps to normalize their feelings of sadness, confusion, and even anger.
  2. Safe Space to Express Feelings: The group offers a non-judgmental environment where children can openly express their emotions and learn that their grief is valid.
  3. Increased Coping Skills: Children develop healthy coping mechanisms that will serve them throughout their lives, such as creative expression, relaxation techniques, and problem-solving strategies.
  4. Support from Trained Facilitators: Skilled grief counselors provide support and guidance to help children navigate difficult emotions.
  5. Social Connection: Children form connections with others who understand their experience, reducing feelings of isolation.
