Volunteering requirements

The Montreal Children’s Hospital depends on reliable and committed volunteers to help ensure the best possible care for our patients and their families, as well as to assist our dedicated staff.

The Montreal Children’s Hospital depends on reliable and committed volunteers to help ensure the best possible care for our patients and families, as well as to assist our dedicated staff. Volunteers must meet the requirements and expectations outlined below in order to ensure the safety and well-being of our patients and their families.

All volunteer candidates must submit the VACCINATION FORM TO BECOME A VOLUNTEER / or proof of required vaccination. Failure to do so will delay the application process.   

Age requirements

You must be at least 18 years old to volunteer at the Montreal Children’s Hospital, and 19 years old to volunteer on inpatient wards. To volunteer at the Royal Victoria Hospital, you have to be at least 16 years old. 

If you are younger than the required ages stated above, but would still like to volunteer, you may consider submitting an application to the  Volunteer Bureau of Montreal or the  MUHC adult hospital sites .

Experience requirements

Experience caring for or working with children is mandatory. This can include experience as a parent, grandparent, aunt or uncle, sibling, summer camp counselor, child care worker, babysitter, teacher, tutor, etc.

Language requirements

We require our volunteers to have a basic knowledge of French and English, which helps ensure the safety of our patient population.

Time commitment

Prospective volunteers must commit to a minimum of three consecutive hours per week for a minimum period of six months with the possibility of extension.
