Orientation Program

General Pediatric Orientation 
2 days of pediatric specific orientation offered to all new nurses and licensed practical nurses at the Montreal Children’s Hospital.

NICU Onboarding Day
An 8-hour welcome day – tour the NICU, familiarize yourself with processes unique to the NICU and spend an the afternoon with a NICU nurse

Independent learning
There are several e-learning modules to complete before attending your NICU orientation. These will be provided to you when you are hired. We also have a NICU website with our protocols, guidelines and tons of interesting articles, presentations and videos to help support your learning.

NICU Theory Part 1
Before starting on the floor, you will received 2 days of NICU-specific theory to help jumpstart your learning in the NICU. Topics covered include respiratory illnesses of the newborn, complications related to prematurity, hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy and much more!

NICU Theory Part 2
Half-way through your orientation, you will have two more training days. One theoretical day, where more advanced NICU content will be discussed; and one simulation-based day, where you can practice skills and consolidate some basic NICU practices.

Practical Orientation
17 shifts (12-hours) of preceptorship with a mid-orientation and final evaluation.

Continuing Education

After orientation, there are many opportunities to continue to develop your knowledge and skills.

​Genesis
These days are spread out over your first 2 years of employment in the NICU and consist of advanced NICU topic presentation and case discussions, peer support, discussions with managers and activity-based learning.

Simulation
Weekly mock codes, skills workshops and other types of simulation are a staple of the NICU, both during the day and at night!

​Academic rounds
All pertinent academic rounds and presentations are offered via Teams/Zoom and links are provided for free accredited continuing education. Neonatal rounds, Schwartz rounds, NICU cardio rounds, NICU neuro rounds! There’s a rounds for everyone.

​Lunch and learns
Topical presentations by NICU staff or guest speakers.
