How to make the most of your clinic visit

The Montreal Children’s Hospital handles approximately 110,000 visits a year in its outpatient clinics and programs. A first-time clinic visit requires a referral from your child’s doctor.

Before your scheduled appointment, make sure you have the following:

  • Your child’s medicare card and hospital card
  • Room number of the clinic (find your clinic here)
  • Name and contact information of your family doctor or pediatrician
  • Any questions you may have about your child’s condition

How to prepare for your visit:

  • Keep a list of any concerns you have. Bring the list with you to discuss these concerns during your visit.
  • Record any symptoms your child may be having.
  • If your child is old enough, talk to them about the visit before you go so they know what to expect.

How to make the visit easier for your child:

  • Young children may find it difficult to sit still in the waiting room. Bring a couple of books, a favourite toy and a snack to help keep your child busy while you wait to see the doctor.
  • If your child is older, explain why they are visiting the doctor. Use simple, easy-to-understand language. Be honest about what your child can expect from the exam.
  • Tell your older child or adolescent that they can see the doctor without you in the room. This might help them feel more comfortable talking with the doctor.
