Services

The Respiratory Medicine (Pulmonology/Respirology) division of the Montreal Children’s Hospital treats infants, children and adolescents with a wide variety of breathing disorders.

In addition to our general consultation and follow-up chest clinics, our department has many specialty clinics, including those for:

  • tuberculosis
  • asthma
  • infant respiratory/home monitoring
  • apnea evaluation/CPAP Clinic
  • primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD)
  • subspecialty resident (fellow) continuity clinic

Our respirologists play a pivotal role in a number of multidisciplinary clinics including:

  • Cystic Fibrosis Clinic
  • Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia (BPD) and Home Oxygen Clinic
  • Neuromuscular Clinic
  • Chronic Home Ventilation Clinic
  • Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia (CDH) Clinic
  • Esophageal Atresia-Tracheoesophageal Fistula (EA-TEF) Clinic
  • Sickle Cell Disease Clinic

We work closely with the Sleep Laboratory, which evaluates children with sleep-related breathing disorders. Studies are done both in the lab and at home. Patients who might have obstructive sleep apnea may be referred directly to the Sleep Laboratory.

Members of our staff also collaborate with the Craniofacial and Cleft Surgery team at the MCH, the Jeremy Rill Centre for Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) and the Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) Prevention Program, and are involved in the care of adult lung transplant recipients.

The Respiratory Department is a leader in community outreach programs that allow patients to receive respiratory care closer to home. We have developed an extensive provincial network with neonatal and pediatric units for remote monitoring, and interpretation of oxygen saturation and apnea recordings. Telehealth consultations are also provided for these cases. We care for patients from the Montreal region as well as from Rouyn-Noranda, Gatineau and Northern Quebec.

Asthma Centre

The Montreal Children’s Hospital’s Asthma Centre is dedicated to treating pediatric asthma in children aged 1 to 18 as well as patients with recurrent viral wheezing. We provide effective tools to help you manage your child’s asthma through medical diagnosis and treatment, patient education, as well as allergy and respiratory testing. Diagnostic allergy skin testing and pulmonary function testing (also known as spirometry and oscillometry) are also available on site. Telehealth services are available on demand.

Resources

Action plan for asthma attacks: This action plan includes a self-assessment asthma quiz adapted for kids. It’s important to go over this quiz with your child regularly. As you measure your child’s symptoms, the quiz will indicate what to do next.
