The MCH continues to ensure the protection of children

8 January 2026

Did you know that the Montreal Children’s Hospital (MCH) is the first hospital in Quebec to be part of a North American effort to ensure the safety of patients in children’s hospitals? Children’s Hospitals’ Solutions for Patient Safety (SPS) is a group of more than 150 pediatric hospitals across Canada and the USA, including the MCH, devoted to the adherence of high safety standards. Our membership attests to staff and hospital’s commitment to safely care for children.

This past summer, SPS launched a special challenge to its members, the 2025 Virtual Learning Series Badge Challenge, where hospitals earned badges through a series of difficult tests. These challenges enabled our hospital to try new tools that allow us to learn from frontline staff who are the experts in the care being provided. Only 27 hospitals were successful in completing all five challenges, including the MCH! Bravo!

“It was exciting to see our MCH team engage with such enthusiasm in the SPS Badge Challenge,” says Dr. Samara Zavalkoff, Medical Director of Mission: Safety (MCH Quality and Safety Program). “We know we have a team that is devoted to providing the safest care; I am not surprised we were among less than 20% of pediatric hospitals to do so!”

“We must act with urgency and discipline, focusing on outcomes through a combination of high reliability concepts and quality improvement science methods. We learn through testing and partnering with families and front-line staff,” states the SPS on their website.
