A delegation from the Montreal Children’s Hospital (MCH) recently made a strong impression at the 10th ERAS World Congress, held in Spain in September. With two guest speakers and the presentation of two posters, the team showcased the MCH’s expertise in pediatric surgery.
Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) is a multimodal perioperative care pathway designed to enable rapid recovery for patients undergoing major surgery.
With six evidence-based core principles, such as patient and family engagement and pain management with fewer narcotics, ERAS improves outcomes for patients undergoing surgery. It enhances the patient experience, reduces length of hospital stay, lowers complication rates, and decreases hospital readmissions.
The McGill University Health Centre has been at the forefront of ERAS for at least a decade, but its introduction into pediatric surgery is a much more recent concept.
The ERAS World Congress brings together expert speakers from around the world. Participants also attend training sessions on the various aspects of ERAS.
