The new McGill University Health Centre (MUHC) at the Glen site is the first university health centre in Quebec to bring care for children and adults together in one location.

True. The Montreal Children’s Hospital (MCH) is the pediatric hospital of the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC), and patients treated at the MCH range in age from newborns to 18 years old.

The MCH is part of the new MUHC complex at the Glen site, which is also home to the Royal Victoria Hospital, the Montreal Chest Institute, the Cedars Cancer Centre, and the Research Institute of the MUHC. It is the only hospital centre in Quebec with pediatric and adult specialities together in one location.

There are a number of advantages to providing care for children and adults in the same setting. For example, the new Neonatal Intensive Care Unit—which has 52 single-patient rooms—is adjacent to the birthing centre in the Royal Victoria Hospital.

Having adult care facilities right beside the MCH will also benefit our teenage patients with complex or chronic conditions who will need to make the transition to adult care when they turn 18. Continuing their care in a familiar environment will help ease their transition.

The advantages of a pediatric-adult centre can be seen in other areas as well. As a teaching hospital affiliated with McGill University, the MCH conducts medical research and trains medical students, and the new hospital centre will provide many more opportunities for our healthcare professionals to collaborate on care, research, and teaching.
