Neurosurgery

We care for patients with brain and spinal cord tumours, in a multidisciplinary fashion with Neuro-Oncology and Radiation Oncology. We hold a multi-institutional tumour board weekly. The hospital is part of the Children’s Oncolgy Group (COG), a North American network. We hold a multi-institutional tumor board weekly.

We provide our patients with expertise in neurological monitoring, including robotic stereo EEG, conventional electroencephalography (EEG) and magnetoencephalography (MEG). Our team brings together specialists from the departments of Neurology and Neurosurgery, and experienced staff in nursing, psychology, occupational therapy, physiotherapy and speech therapy. A comprehensive epilepsy conference is held weekly.

Patients are seen at both the MCH, where we perform surgery, and at the Shriners Hospital, located adjacent to the MUHC Glen site, for screening and follow-up. The program brings together specialists from the departments of Neurology, Neurosurgery, Orthopedics, Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy.

This program received a prize of excellence in the Inter-Disciplinarity from the FMSQ for its approach in 2020.

Neurosurgical interventions offered include Selective Dorsal Rhizotomies for patients with ambulatory potential and Intrathecal Baclofen for more severely involved patients.

A team of specialists from the departments of Neurosurgery, Orthopedics, Urology and Pediatrics, Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy provide care to children who have shunts (a tube which drains fluid from around the brain), motor and sensory deficits or neurogenic bladder and bowel (a condition which affects the spinal cord nerves that control bladder and bowel function).

The Montreal Children’s Hospital is a level 1 Trauma Centre. The Trauma Program team reviews the overall management of traumatic brain injuries (TBI), a large compnent of trauma in children.

Our neurosurgeons evaluate and counsel expectant parents of children with neurosurgical ailments, in collaboration with specialists from the Medical Genetics and the Fetal Diagnosis and Treatment Group.
