Medical Inpatient Services are responsible for the care of infants, children and adolescents requiring medical care outside the intensive care units, excluding patients admitted for problems already diagnosed in hematology-oncology. Patients are admitted for problems falling within the scope of general tertiary pediatrics, but also requiring sub-specialty care such as nephrology, adolescent medicine, rheumatology, gastroenterology, pneumology and endocrinology.
Services
Common diagnoses of patients cared for in the unit are often infection-related and include pneumonia, asthma, bronchiolitis, urinary tract infections, growth retardation, global developmental delay, neonatal fever and seizures. One third of admissions to medical inpatient services are transferred from the hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and Pediatric Intensive Care Unit.
The unit is a key training center for McGill pediatric residents, medical students, nursing students and many other types of trainees, with often more than 30 trainees working on a given day on both day and night shifts.
