Endocrinology and Metabolism

The Endocrinology and Metabolism service comprises a diabetes clinic and an endocrinology clinic, as well as external clinics.

Services

At the endocrinology clinic, we treat children for problems related to overall growth, thyroid issues, adrenal and pituitary gland issues and related conditions. At the diabetes clinic, we provide specialized care for children who carry insulin pumps and children with type 1 (juvenile) diabetes who require insulin injections every day. We also have an in-patient consult service which helps with the care of children with endocrine issues who have been hospitalized for other reasons. We care for children with disorders such as:

  • juvenile diabetes
  • slowed or abnormal growth
  • early or delayed puberty
  • thyroid gland dysfunction
  • diabetes insipidus
  • hypoglycemia
  • lipid and metabolic bone disturbances
  • tumours of endocrine glands

An important aspect of our work is diabetes education for newly-diagnosed children and adolescents, and their families, to teach them about day-to-day, self-administered care.

We also hold external clinics at:

  • The Angus Medical Clinic
  • Hygea Medical Clinic
  • Brunswick Medical Center
