PRESS RELEASE
The Glen site now open to pediatric patients
Montreal, May 24, 2015 – As part of Canada’s biggest hospital move, the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC) completed today at 10:57 am the transfer of the Montreal Children’s Hospital to the Glen site. Following the same rigorous methodology that proved effective for the adult patients transfer on April 26, 66 young patients were safely moved in a well-orchestrated operation which lasted 3 hours 57 minutes.
“Countless hours have been put into making today a success and it truly paid off. This experience has been both a rare challenge and a privilege for the Montreal Children’s Hospital. The cooperation and support of everyone involved in this move has been exemplary,” said Dr. Harley Eisman, Medical Director of the Pediatric Emergency Service at the Montreal Children’s Hospital of the MUHC. “Healthcare providers, volunteers, Urgences-Santé paramedics, and the staff from Health Care Relocations should all be applauded for their hard work and dedication. I would also like to thank the entire healthcare network for supporting us during this transition. Our patients and families are always at the forefront of everything we do and I am certain they will be very happy in this new home of ours.” Médicar, the Ville de Montréal, the City of Westmount, Transports Québec and the SPVM also contributed to the success of this event.
The Montreal Children’s Hospital at the new Glen site has been designed with the input of our staff to create efficient spaces that support today’s best practices in pediatric medicine, making our ability to provide excellent care to patients and their families easier. Adjacent to the adult hospital, the new Children’s comes complete with 154 single patient rooms, each with a section with large couches for parents to keep their children company both day and night. Now more than ever, our inter-disciplinary teams have the opportunity to come together to share their knowledge, discoveries and resources, furthering their contribution to the advancement of medicine in Montreal and the world.
“We have been dreaming, planning and preparing for this moment for many years and we are very excited to begin this new chapter in our lives. When the Children’s moved to 2300 Tupper in 1956, I am sure the staff felt many of the same things we are feeling today: excitement, anticipation and the hope that we will forever honour our heritage as a hospital that always puts the patient and family first. I have no doubt we will continue to be that place”, said Martine Alfonso, Associate Director General of the Montreal Children’s Hospital of the MUHC.
The Montreal Children’s Hospital’s clinical activities will gradually resume at the Glen site. The final phase of the MUHC 2015 transformation will come with the move of the Montreal Chest Institute and some services from the Montreal General Hospital on June 14.
