Patient procedure for whooping cough testing

Beginning Monday, July 29, 2024, and until October 1, 2024, MUHC patients who require screening for pertussis (whooping cough) will be able to get tested at the COVID-19 Testing Clinic located at the Glen site in Level 1 of the parking lot, DS1-0052, near the entrance to the Adult Emergency Department (1001 Decarie Blvd., Montréal QC H4A 3J1) Please note, we will not be accepting patients referred from outside the MUHC. 

Patients needing a test must be given a prescription. 

A prescription for pertussis clearly indicating the following will be required:  

  1. Patient information (name, date of birth, RAMQ, MRN)  
  2. The test required (bordetella holmesii, or/and pertussis or/and parapertussis)
  3. The physician license number  
  4. Physician signature (if signed by a resident treating physician license # is required)  
  5. Date of prescription  
  6. If STAT, please indicate on prescription.  
    – The clinic/ doctors office
    – Address for return or results
    – The phone number of the physician/ clinic

The prescription must be legible and contain required information; otherwise, the patient may be asked to return at a later.

Important: Patients will need to respond YES to the priority question and book an appointment under COVID-19 testing.  

Appointment times must be respected and patients must provide:  

  1. The prescription  
  2. RAMQ card  
  3. Hospital card

Once at the clinic, patients must wash their hands at the entrance and wear a mask.  

The test centre will proceed with a nasal-pharyngeal swab and complete a lab request for bordetella holmesii, or/and pertussis or/and parapertussis.

Physicians will have to consult the results in Oacis and are responsible for communicating these results to the patient.
